Port of Los Angeles gets a record start to January 2025


The Port of Los Angeles got off to a historic start in the first month of 2025, handling 924,245 TEUs, the busiest January in the port's 117-year history and an 8% increase over the same period last year. This result not only marks good momentum for the Port of Los Angeles to handle an average of more than 927,000 Container units for seven consecutive months, but also reflects the strong performance of the U.S. economy and the need for importers to stock up ahead in response to tariffs and the Lunar New Year.
Speaking at a media briefing, Port of LA Executive Director Gene Seroka said: "This January result continues our strong performance over the past few months, with an average of more than 927,000 Container units handled over the past seven months. The strong economic environment coupled with importers' early stockpiling in order to circumvent potential tariff effects were key factors driving January results. ”
Seroka also stressed the importance of efficiency in port operations: "We continue to handle these record cargo volumes quickly and efficiently, with no delays on vessels. Thank you to the members of the International Terminal & Warehouse Union (ILWU), truck drivers, terminal operators, and all stakeholders for their joint efforts to keep setting new records. ”

Specifically, the full import volume of the Port of Los Angeles in January 2025 reached To 483,831 TEU, A year-on-year increase of 9.5%; The full-load export volume is 113,271 TEU, This is a 10.5% decline from the same period in 2024. In addition, the empty container handling volume reached 327,143 TEU, This is an increase of 14% compared to last year.
