Recently, merger regulators in the European Union approved Two acquisitions by MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company aimed at expanding its logistics business. These include the share acquisition of HHLA in Hamburg, a Hamburg-based Container operator and port services provider, and the acquisition of Clasquin, a French international freight forwarding and logistics company.

Hamburg Port is one of the largest ports in Germany and an important shipping hub in Europe. Its geographical location is very important. The acquisition of HHLA by MSC will help it further expand its logistics network in Europe.

As for the French company Clasquin, it has a certain market share in the field of international freight forwarding and logistics.

In the process of acquiring HHLA, the European Commission took into account the competitive landscape in the Nordic region and believed that the acquisition would not raise competition concerns. As for the acquisition of Clasquin, the committee believes that its market impact is small because of its relatively niche market positioning.

The Hamburg City Council approved the MSC takeover despite facing opposition from political factions and German trade unions.

Currently, MSC has committed to a 40-year management contract with the city of Hamburg, aiming at increasing Container traffic in Hamburg and setting up a German Headquarters in the city.

Additionally, MSC has acquired a 42% stake in Clasquin through its affiliate, Shipping Agencies Services, which is expected to close on October 9. Subsequently, a tender for the remaining shares will be launched, which will Clasquin integrates into its larger logistics business, focusing on international markets.

These acquisitions will help MSC further expand its logistics business and improve its competitiveness in the global market.
