Hapag-Lloyd orders 24 new boxships for $4 billion

Hapag-Lloyd recently announced a major investment plan, which will spend approximately US $4 billion to order 24 new container ships. The new vessels will be delivered successively between 2027 and 2029, marking an important step for the company in achieving its' Strategy 2030 'objectives.

Order Details

This order is divided into two parts:

  • 12 large containerships of 16,800 TEU: Built by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group. The vessels will be used to expand service capacity on existing routes.
  • 12 9,200 TEU medium containerships: Built by New Times Shipbuilding Company Ltd. These vessels will replace older vessels that are about to be retired, further improving the overall efficiency of the fleet.


All new vessels will be equipped with advanced low-emission high-pressure liquefied gas dual-fuel engines that are not only extremely fuel efficient, but also use biomethane as fuel, reducing CO2 equivalent emissions by up to 95%. Additionally, the vessels will be ammonia fuel ready to prepare for future multi-fuel operations.
